We carried out audience research by carrying out a questionnaire during our class. These are a few of the questions we asked:
- Gender: Female - 4 Male - 2
- Age: 16 - 2 17 - 2 18+ - 2
- Favourite genre of film: Horror - 1 Comedy - 3 Rom-com - 1 Sci Fi - 1
- What do you look for in a film: Humour - 3 Twist - 1 Escapism - 1 Good Storyline - 1
- What is your favourite sub-genre of crime: Film Noir - 1 Action - 1 Police - 2 Detective - 2
- How often do you watch films: Weekly - 1 Fortnightly - 4 Monthly - 1
Here are graphs showing the results:
From this research I have learnt that young people around the ages of 16 and 17 prefer comedy films to humour and entertain whereas older people prefer sci fi and horror films because of deep story lines and as a form of escapism. For the sub-genres of crime, police and detective were the most popular because of the interesting story lines and because the audience like to play along and guess who the villains will be and what will happen next. When I asked the question 'who is your favourite actor or actress?' each person gave me the name of an American actor or actress. From this learnt that most people preferred American actors and actresses such as Jennifer Aniston and Benn Stiller which means that with my age group, American films are most popular than British films.
From this information, we have decided that our target audience will be older, more mature people above the age of twenty who watch a film for its story line and mystery rather than comedy. The film will border on horror as it involves a stalker and a kidnap so would only be suitable for older audiences.
